The reference to an interesting paper on you-are-here maps is:

Marvin Levine, "You-are-here maps: psychological considerations," Environment and Behavior, Vol. 14, No. 2, March 1982, pp. 221-237.

Bizarrely, I find the best articles in this general domain (which I'm going to class as 'random articles about built form I find strangely interesting' are in the un-charmingly named "Environment and Planning B", which has great stuff from the wierdest places. Highly recommended.
